New book on Walhalla gives a wonderful insight into the town's people, places and mines. On Sunday 26 October, 2003 a large crowd gathered at the Mechanics Institute in Walhalla for a rare event...the launch of a book that will become "the reference" for Walhalla Historic Township. Not since the release of "Walhalla Heyday" over 30 years ago has there been a book about Walhalla that is so comprehensive and well researched. "Walhalla - Valley of Gold" has been wriiten by John Aldersea and Barbard Hood (John lived in Walhalla as a child and with Barbara was a recent resident...number 13 in fact!) which is a professionally presented hard cover with 292 pages and more than 80 photos. While it is very well researched, it is also a good read that has a personal touch with lots of homely stories about the townsfolk of yesteryear. John and Barbara have done a stirling job of putting together the book with plenty of colour photos and illustrations...it's easy to visualise Walhalla and the surrounds as it was with the "then" and "now" photos putting it all into context and bringing the stories alive. Walhalla - Valley of God would make a excellent Christmas gift (you don't have to be a "Walhalla buff" to find this book of interest) and it is available directly from John and Barbara or from the Corner Stores in Walhalla. The RRP is $65...which is good value for such a fine book. Congratulations to both John and Barbara for a great effort. |
