TRAIL RUNNING TAKES OFF !

Trail running is a tremendously popular activity around the world, and is becoming better known and increasingly popular in Australia. Organised trail running enables like-minded people to enjoy running, social company and the security of numbers while enjoying magnificant scenery. Local runners select courses through some of Victoria’s most scenic, spectacular and historic natural areas.
“Trail Running Victoria” is a new group set up to promote this recent arrival on the sports-recreation scene, and has conducted a number of successful runs, with bush, beach and mountain running
events coming up.

THE WALHALLA WOUND-UP

Traralgon runner Bruce Salisbury has his own dream, that is now set to become an annual event,. A veteran member of the Traralgon Harriers Athletics Club with a number of state distance running titles to his name, Bruce has devised three local runs of different lengths
19 kilometres, 37 kilometres and, for the super fit, 50 kilometres.

The three courses wind their way through the Walhalla Historic Area, taking participants through significant features and breath-taking scenery, while the two longer routes also pass through the Coopers Creek Historic Area.

Intending participants are encouraged to set achievable goals and work towards them.

The runs start and finish at Walhalla’s Star Hotel, taking in the historic bridges of Poverty Point Bridge and Bruntons Bridge, with 16 kilometres of walking track and the rest on unsealed roads with some big undulations.

COURSE DETAILS

Walhalla Wound-Up Trail Run, 2 May 2004

All runs start from Walhalla’s Star Hotel, following the Alpine Walking Track (Long Tunnel Firewood Tramway Number One), turning north and crossing the recently renovated Poverty Point bridge across the Thomson River before returning south to the Thomson railway station.

The 50 km course then follows the Goldfields rail trail to Platina station, down to the re-built Coopers Creek Hotel, then past the Boola Boola Winery to the main Tyers-Walhalla road. It then follows the Cowwar-Erica road towards Cowwar before turning north onto Bruntons Bridge Road, across the Thomson River and winding north-west onto the Maiden Town track, Old Coach Road then Church Hill Road, past the historic St John’s Church of England into Walhalla, finishing at Walhalla’s Star Hotel.

From Thomson railway station the 19 km course retraces the outward leg along the Long Tunnel Firewood Tramway back to Walhalla, while the 37 km course follows the 50 km route to the Boola Boola Winery, but then returns north along the main Tyers-Walhalla road to meet the Walhalla Goldfields Rail Trail, which it retraces back to Walhalla township and the Star Hotel.
