Walhalla Station

The Moe to Walhalla railway was a late addition to the town, it arrived in 1910 after 30 years of lobbying the government. It was too late, as the gold ran out in 1914, and the railway was then responsible for much of the destruction of Walhalla...it provided a cheap source of transport for people to remove their homes and buildings! The unique narrow gauge (2'6") railway was one of four built in Victoria to open up remote parts of the state.
The others were:
Wangaratta to Whitfield
Ferntree Gully to Gembrook (Puffing Billy)
Colac to Beech Forest/Crowes

The line to Walhalla was the last built and the first to close. It operated into Walhalla until 1944, when the line was truncated at Erica. This section operated until 1954. The station building shown in the photograph was removed during the 1930s to become the "Hartwell" station on the Alamein line of the Melbourne suburban system. After the line closed completely in 1954, all the rolling stock and rails were removed.

The line has since been reopened to Walhalla Historic Township from Thomson in March 2002.
The Walhalla Goldfields Railway now operates on the most spectacular section of the line, the last 4.5 kilometres up Stringers Creek Gorge to Walhalla Historic Township.
