Water Wheel in Stringers Creek

Throughout the gold-era, there was an entire secondary industry of processing waste products from the main mines. It was not economic for the major mines to fully process their ore, so some of the excess ore (and the gold) was washed into the creek. Down stream there were a number of water wheels that would process the unwanted tailings. The low cost of these operations meant that they could make money from this waste, whereas the major mines could not.
The particular water wheel was located at the "Cascades" on Stringers Creek about a kilometre out of town. You can still clearly see this site today from the
Walhalla Goldfields Railway.
