Walhalla Main Road

This view is along the Main Road looking south towards the Junction. The Star Hotel is the two storey building with the iron lace verandah. The building next door to the Star Hotel (towards the camera) is the Walhalla Cooperative Meat Supply. There were several butchers in Walhalla all of whom maintained stockyards on the top of the hills around the town. The remains of these stockyards can be found at "Pig Point" and the "Slaughter Yard Track" takes you to the site of a slaughter yard where cattle were slaughtered. Using some 19th century ingenuity, rather than cut up the meat up on the hill, a trained horse would drag the carcass down to the butcher's shop in town below where it was prepared for sale.
