Bushfires December 2006

The bushfires of December 2006 and January 2007 will be remembers for a very long time. In the end, over 1.25 billion hectares of the Alps was destroyed. Mountain towns like Omeo, Dargo, Licola, Mt Buller, Sawmill Settlement, Woods Point, Gaffneys Creek, Kevington, Tolmie and Walhalla had to face what was a long battle. Walhalla was one of the lucky ones, we didn't lose a building and we managed to protect the town with minimal impact. Few people today would realise that a fire was so close as the vally is lush and green. The "Valley of the Gods" had some divine intervention!
